The Medical Reform Group
is a democratic organization of physicians, medical students and others committed to ensuring access to high quality health care for all Canadians. Our goal is to provide a voice for physicians and others who share the MRG principles and beliefs and we do this by:
- analyzing the principles
and structures on which the present health care
delivery systems is based.
- exploring and
supporting innovative ideas.
- lobbying provincial
and federal governments and associated health agencies
so as to influence decisions which affect the health status
of Canadians.
- educating ourselves,
other health care workers, and the public with regard
to the present determinants of health, and how they could
be productively changed.
- allying ourselves
with other individuals and groups working for positive
change in the health care system, by endorsing and supporting
their work and providing our special knowledge, skills and
attitudes where they may be of benefit.
How We Work:
- We speak out against
user fees, administrative fees and other deterrents
to equal access to health care.
- We oppose federal
funding cuts to Medicare programs.
- We call on the
federal government to enforce the Canada Health Act
and to penalize provinces which violate the Act's principles
of universality, comprehensiveness, portability, accessibility,
and public administration.
- We support reform
of primary care delivery, including a move away from
fee-for-service toward capitation and salary, and emphasizing
a team approach using the skills of a variety of health
care professionals.
- We support reproductive
choice, including easy access to contraception and
to safe medically insured abortion clinics.
- We advocate for
more rational pharmaceutical prescribing practices,
both in Canada and internationally.
- We call for restrictions
on drug company advertising and detailing practices
and oppose the involvement of drug company representatives
in educational events for medical students and residents.
